A remix of a 1994 Everything But The Girl record has produced the messiest public dispute in dance music this summer. Here is what actually happened between John Summit, Pete Tong and Franky Rizardo.

The accusation — 8 July

Summit went public on X: "Hey @petetong thanks for promising to release my missing remix with u (while doing nothing in terms of production) then jacking my remix to release with Franky Rizardo."

He backed it with WhatsApp screenshots showing Tong requesting his session files and stems to record an orchestral version together, and mentioning he had recreated parts and was working on vocals with Julia and Mark Ralph. Summit says he then finished his own orchestral version independently.

Rizardo withdraws — 8 July

The next day, Franky Rizardo pulled his remix from release entirely. "It no longer feels right," he said, adding that he was not taking sides: "Staying true to my values matters more to me than releasing a record." He revealed he had made the remix in a car on the way to a show, and would keep it as a set-only track.

Tong responds — 11 July

Tong's account is different. He says the orchestral arrangement was created for his Ibiza Classics tour, that he cleared it with Everything But The Girl's Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt, and that he held separate conversations with Summit and Rizardo about different versions of the same song.

"It's quite normal when releasing a song to have different versions of the same song," he said, presenting a proposal document showing Rizardo's version releasing first with minimal orchestral elements and Summit's following later in the summer.

"I'm disappointed," Tong added. "I don't like being accused of things that aren't true." He says he tried to reach Summit by phone and text.

Where it stands

Unresolved. Summit later played his orchestral 'Missing' rework live at Experts Only at Tofte Manor.
