The Magician's 'I Follow Rivers' Remix Crosses 1 Billion Spotify Streams

A free download from 2011 has quietly become one of the biggest dance remixes of all time. The Magician's rework of Lykke Li's 'I Follow Rivers' has officially crossed 1 billion Spotify streams.
Belgian producer Stephen Fasano — one half of Aeroplane — first put the remix out in 2011 as a free download, and it grew slowly into a dance-music staple over the following years. It turned Lykke Li's brooding indie-pop original into a euphoric nu-disco anthem that has since soundtracked films, weddings, Boiler Rooms and wave after wave of TikTok resurgences.
The organic billion
What makes the milestone notable is how it got there: organically, without major-label promotion — a genuine slow-burn built on DJ support and word of mouth rather than a marketing budget. It's a reminder that in an era of playlist engineering, some records still climb on merit alone.
Fasano and Lykke Li have kept the partnership alive, reuniting in 2026 for a fresh remix of 'Lucky Again' — 15 years on from the rework that started it all. Lykke Li has had a strong 2026 elsewhere too, featuring on Swedish House Mafia's 'Happiness Is So Sad'.
