Roni Size is taking drum & bass somewhere it's never been: 1,375 feet underground. The Mercury Prize-winning producer will attempt the world's deepest underground rave on 15 October 2026, deep inside the abandoned Cwmorthin slate mine in Eryri (Snowdonia), North Wales.
The record attempt — sponsored by G-SHOCK, which is using the event to debut its £200 GDG-B100 MUDMAN watch ahead of wider release — remains subject to independent verification. A limited number of public ballot winners will join Size on a guided descent led by Go Below, involving stairways, water crossings, zip lines and abseiling; entries closed 9 October, with places gated by age, fitness and equipment requirements.
The tech behind it
This isn't just a stunt location — the mine becomes part of the instrument. Parts of the set will be transmitted into the rock via vibration transducers, with geophones and hydrophones capturing the resulting sound and feeding it back into the live mix. G-SHOCK Radio will broadcast the event via Starlink, with the full set posted to Mixcloud afterward.
For Size, who came up through Bristol's sound system scene and won the 1997 Mercury Prize with Reprazent, it's a deliberate return to his roots. He calls it "the most underground of underground raves ever."
